435 Lasuen Mall, Stanford University
Free Admission.
On May 3rd, Ustad F. Wasifuddin Dagar, the famous vocalist representing the 20th generation of the unbroken Dagar lineage, performs in the ancient Dhrupad tradition of North India. Dhrupad is the most ancient form of classical music that still survives in its original form in South Asia. The word Dhrupad is derived from 'Dhruva', the evening star, and 'Pada' meaning poetry. Dhrupad is characterized by a purity of tone and raga and is said to offer a sense of peace and contemplation to the listener. With a voice that ranges across three octaves, Wasifuddin Dagar uses subtle variations and improvisations to bring out the personality of each raga in great clarity. A world-renowned exponent of the ancient Indian classical music art form, Wasifuddin Dagar has performed extensively around the world and continues to teach, despite his active concert schedule.
