Proving his mettle
His claim to fame is not just the fact that he
is nephew, son and disciple of the celebrated Dagar Brothers and
represents the Dagarvani school of music. But Ustad F. Wasifuddin Dagar
fills every note with space and colour in his ''alaap'' as was evident
this past week-end when he performed for ''Fete De La Musique'' along
with Usha Uthup, Parkirama and the French band, GMT. Having recorded for Music Today and several
other recording labels earlier, Wasifuddin is a well-known name in
India and abroad and even some members of GMT admitted that they had
heard his name and his music. His latest album, recording he did for
UNESCO in Paris last year, which will be released shortly.
``He travels extensively and easily across
three octaves delineating the personality of the raga in clarity,''
says a critic. ''The Dagarvani school is known for its elaborate and
extensively researched alaap. Wasifuddin's powerful gamaks are fast and
sonorous and yet, there is softness and sweetness in the raga.''
